WHAT RING WILL SUIT MY FINGER BEST?

WHAT RING WILL SUIT MY FINGER BEST?

September 20, 2016

No matter how beautiful the engagement ring may be, there might be certain types of rings that look unflattering around your ring finger. Choosing the perfect engagement ring can be compared to the quest of finding the right jeans/swimsuit for your shape. It has to be flattering.

No need to worry, there certainly is a ring out there that fits your finger perfectly. There’s a ring style and shape to flatter every finger and every hand, accentuating all the beauty while minimising the things you don’t like.

The most important thing is proportion; to balance the length and width of your fingers against the shape and size of the stone, as well as the style of the ring.

Luckily, with a small amount of guidance you don’t need to spend hours trying on rings from a display case in order to narrow down your options. Whether you’re openly choosing your engagement ring with your groom-to-be or trying to influence him subtly (or not too subtly, lol!) from the sidelines, use these pointers to jumpstart your search and find the most flattering ring for your unique finger shape and size.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER:

  • Length of your fingers
  • Width of your fingers
  • Shape of the stone(s)
  • Size of the stone(s)
  • Width of the band
  • Style of the ring
  • Overall size of your hand

Also consider your typical nail length and shape: are they usually trimmed short or long, manicured and shaped? Longer nails lengthen the appearance of your fingers, so also become part of the equation.

Most importantly, your personal taste/preferences & lifestyle/occupation should be factored in.

We’ve created some helpful guidelines here. But if your heart is set on a particular stone and shape, you need to honour that.

    1. Long fingers

A woman with long fingers has an advantage - a lot of engagement ring styles will look great on her fingers!

One of our favourite looks with longer fingers is a classic round stone or popular princess cut diamond. These shapes are timeless and extremely flattering. The shape of the stone will not make your finger look any shorter and will compliment your long fingers with timeless elegance.

Long fingers tend to look amazing with more extravagant rings, set with coloured stones. This can easily overwhelm and look unflattering on shorter fingers.

In addition, wider bands tend to complement length, but you can stick with a slim band if you wish.

    2. Short fingers

With shorter fingers, the trick is to create the illusion of longer fingers and choose a setting that will help to enhance the lines of your fingers.

By choosing elongated diamond shapes like pear, marquise, and oval shaped diamonds, your fingers will appear longer. Rectangular emerald-shaped stones can lengthen short fingers, as long they aren’t so big they overwhelm.

Another trick to enhance the long lines of your fingers and prevent them from appearing shorter is to choose a setting with a slimmer band.

    3. Skinny fingers

When choosing an engagement ring for slender fingers, the main consideration is not to overpower them.

The incredible advantage a woman has with skinnier fingers is that a small diamond will look bigger on her! Smaller stones can help make thin fingers appear wider and will not appear overwhelming.

A slightly wider band also makes your fingers look less slim. This makes everything a bit more proportionate.

    4. Wide fingers

If you have wide fingers, the trick in the search for the perfect engagement ring is to ensure on both sides of the ring the skin shows as little as possible.

Another great trick is to find an engagement ring with a thicker band. That way, the band's volume will fill up more of your finger which works to actually slim the rest of the finger.

Split shank rings have bands that split at some point as they come to meet the center stone. This creates two different paths that take up more volume on your finger, similar to the effect a thicker band gives you. The split band will be a heavier look that works great with wide fingers to balance them out.

So fear not, having wide fingers gives you more room to have fun that ranges from funky to classic, and to really make a statement.

The bigger and more conspicuous the engagement ring, the better. Small/narrow stones tend to make wide fingers look even wider.

    5. Big Knuckles

Some women have larger knuckles that can make it difficult to pair with an engagement ring.

One trick we recommend is to choose a three stone ring that will add volume horizontally across your finger that will match up with the width of your knuckles. This creates a more streamlined look that will be very flattering on her hand.

Also, look at thicker, heavier bands. These draw attention to the ring and will distract from your knuckles.

    6. Small or Big Hands

The choice of the engagement ring depends not only on the shape of your fingers, but also on the size of your hands.

With small hands, it is best to keep the overall proportion of your ring small. Small round, princess-cut, oval or heart-shaped stones work especially well.

For large hands, an extravagant engagement ring is the best choice. Try larger rings that suit your personality since you have room to get creative. You can easily get away with bulky, chunky styles.

Most importantly, try on different rings and see which shapes and styles look best to you. In the end, you’re the best judge of the perfect engagement ring for your finger.
